Automatic Waste Segregation System
Final Senior Design Project with Computer Vision and Mechanical Actuators
Automatic Waste Segregation System
Duration: September 2022 – September 2023
Type: Final Senior Design Project
This project represents my capstone achievement during my undergraduate studies at Khalifa University. I led the development of a patented smart waste segregation system that combines advanced computer vision modules with precise mechanical actuators to automatically classify and sort different types of waste materials.
Project Overview:
The Automatic Waste Segregation System addresses the growing environmental concern of proper waste management by providing an intelligent, automated solution for waste classification and sorting. The system can identify various types of waste materials including plastics, metals, paper, and organic waste with high accuracy.
Key Features:
- Computer Vision Module: Advanced image processing and machine learning algorithms for waste classification
- Mechanical Actuators: Precision sorting mechanisms for physical waste separation
- Real-time Processing: Immediate waste identification and sorting capabilities
- High Accuracy: Achieved superior classification performance compared to manual sorting
- Patent Achievement: The innovative design was awarded a patent
Technical Implementation:
- Developed custom computer vision algorithms using OpenCV and deep learning frameworks
- Implemented real-time object detection and classification models
- Designed and integrated mechanical systems for automated sorting
- Created a user-friendly interface for system monitoring and control
- Conducted extensive testing and validation across different waste types
Technologies Used:
- Python
- OpenCV
- TensorFlow/PyTorch
- Raspberry Pi/Arduino
- Mechanical Engineering CAD tools
- Real-time embedded systems programming
Impact:
This project demonstrates the practical application of AI and robotics in solving real-world environmental challenges, showcasing the potential for automated systems to improve waste management efficiency and environmental sustainability. img: /assets/img/12.jpg —
You can also put regular text between your rows of images. Say you wanted to write a little bit about your project before you posted the rest of the images. You describe how you toiled, sweated, bled for your project, and then… you reveal its glory in the next row of images.
The code is simple. Just wrap your images with <div class="col-sm"> and place them inside <div class="row"> (read more about the Bootstrap Grid system). To make images responsive, add img-fluid class to each; for rounded corners and shadows use rounded and z-depth-1 classes. Here’s the code for the last row of images above:
<div class="row justify-content-sm-center">
<div class="col-sm-8 mt-3 mt-md-0">
{% include figure.liquid path="assets/img/6.jpg" title="example image" class="img-fluid rounded z-depth-1" %}
</div>
<div class="col-sm-4 mt-3 mt-md-0">
{% include figure.liquid path="assets/img/11.jpg" title="example image" class="img-fluid rounded z-depth-1" %}
</div>
